It’s that time of the year where a wardrobe clear out is pretty much essential and with the likes of Marie Kondo (yep, I’m addicted to the Netflix series) inspiring us to get our shit together, there is no better time than the present. I have recently removed three huge bag fulls of clothing from my wardrobe that no longer “sparks joy” and I’m left with my favourite pieces that are essential to my everyday dressing. I’m a pretty simple dresser, I love my basics, so I thought I would bring a series of posts to the blog all about my wardrobe staples. This week we are focusing on dresses and out of my collection of dresses I have whittled it down to 6 dresses that I, personally think, every girl needs in their wardrobe.
THE LEOPARD PRINT DRESS
Oh leopard print, the marmite of patterns, I for one love it, but I do understand it can sometimes be a little more Kat Slater than chic, however, if you get the colour way right and the print the right size I really do think it can look awesome. This little treat from PrettyLittleThing is everything I want in a leopard print dress, a more orangey tone brings it right up to date and the ruffle detail adds much more interest than your standard midi dress. So how do I style this you ask? I would wear an oversized, black sweatshirt that comes to just past the hips, throw on my black old skool vans, and a cross body bag. So for all you Tomboy’s out there like myself, leopard print dresses ARE wearable!
This is a given isn’t it? If you don’t have a little black dress in your wardrobe then who are you? It has made my essential list because it’s so damn handy when you’ve got a last minute event/date or anything you need to look smart for. I wear it with heels and a clutch for a smart event or chuck it over a white t-shirt and pair with high top converse and an aviator jacket for a laid back, casual look. I don’t think you can go far wrong when it comes to the LBD. They come in all shapes and style so ladies, there is no excuse!
THE JUMPER DRESS
No matter the colour, the print, the length, everyone needs a jumper dress in their collection. This piece can be layered up in the winter and worn on it’s own in the summer with bare legs and a cool pair of trainers. A perfect piece for the days your can’t be bothered to think what to wear, chuck it over a pair of faux leather leggings with Dr Martens and a longline puffa coat, the opportunities are endless with a jumper dress, and I am currently living in this stripey number!
THE SHIRT DRESS
Like I said previously I’m a massive tomboy and if you are too then you probably avoid wearing pretty dresses like the plague. If this is the case then the shirt dress is for you. This rusty number is extremely versatile and can be worn in many ways. I wear it as it is with trainers and a backpack, worn open with a band t-shirt, black skinny jeans and docs or even tied around the waist to add a bit of interest to an otherwise boring outfit. The quality of this shirt dress is incredible, a super thick cotton with heavy duty buttons, I’m in love with this piece!
THE HOODIE DRESS
The hoodie dress has all the qualities of the jumper dress but a lot cosier, that hood makes all the difference! I have a few hoodie dresses in a variety of colours and they are so handy, again, worn alone or layered up in the colder months. My favourite way to wear then currently is underneath a blazer. A few years ago you wouldn’t catch me in a blazer as I was convinced I wasn’t “professional enough” and they were too smart, however, putting a hoodie underneath them is a whole different ball game and my go-to everyday, casual look.
THE POLKA DOT DRESS
So, this is a new one for me and granted, a little bit girly, however, I’m going to try my best to squeeze it into my wardrobe staples as I’ve always loved polka dots and really do lack this print in my collection. I love the 70’s feel with the flute sleeve and tie neck, I think with black vans, a beanie and a sheepskin aviator this polka dot midi dress could be a winner and I’m really looking forward to styling it.
So there you have it, my run down of my wardrobe essentials – Dresses Edition, I will be styling these pieces over the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled! How would you wear these pieces? I’d love to hear your styling ideas
